SIRC – where living is learning

Amrita*

(*Views of SIRC Research Interns# as expressed to Ms. Amrita)

Assistant Professor, GVP College of Engineering, Madhurawada, Visakhapatnam 530048

“SIRC is a cerebral oasis where principles of technology (sometimes fossilized) are taken out from the cold storage and life is fused into them. SIRC is a Research Centre where we witness a paradigm shift in terms of the definitions, perspectives, contours of science, engineering and technology. SIRC is a place where the traditional approaches to engineering and technology undergo a sea change. SIRC is a place where, Can I becomes I Can. After associating with SIRC, just after few months, we realized that we are no more aimless arrows but guided missiles.

Managing time properly, respecting time, working with people who are totally different, realizing the inherent beauty of discipline, accepting challenges, celebrating successful completion of deadlines, sharing knowledge, patience, active listening, tolerance and self-actualization are some of the many things we learnt. Science and sensibility are worn into a beautiful tapestry. Time flies in SIRC. Hours seem minutes. Each and every task or project or work assigned to us was a joyful activity. Instead of waiting for the college bus, we thronged around the campus till 7 in the night. We were never tired or bored. A burning desire to create and invent something is in the atmosphere of SIRC.

The methodology adopted by Prof. Dr. Rao Tatavarti gave a new dimension to our thinking process. Prof. Rao Tatavarti pioneered an unobtrusive work culture where in his research associates and the periodically rotating team leads would be constantly in touch with him thus obtaining individual guidance in terms of technical knowledge per se and the management of projects at hand and people in project teams – thus ensuring that the benefits of both knowledge and management are gained by all students. Debates, projects, hands-on approach and assistance in getting our papers published in IEEE Journals, unleashed our hidden potential. We fell in love with research, as we saw the applications of theoretical knowledge.

CATIA, MATLAB, Lab View, Signal Processing, Circuit Designing and Circuit Building, PCB etching, Fabrication of ICs or simply removing a resistor or a capacitor and soldering microcontrollers improved our logical thinking, enhanced our technical knowledge and also programming skills. The systematic approach that Prof. Tatavarti followed towards the fundamentals of Science, Engineering and Technology was novel and a revelation to us. Our work in realizing the Wind Tunnel Facility was a milestone in our career. Our work in the design and development of vibration and condition monitoring system thrilled us. Our efforts and work on OADS (Optical Air Data Systems) was instrumental in getting us placed in top notch organizations like Wipro, TCS and TSPDL (Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited) for which we are indebted to SIRC.

Our love for SIRC and the knowledge we acquired there helped us to learn our core subjects better. Proverbially speaking we had the unique opportunity of having the cake and eating it too (as most of us were even paid an internship by Prof. Dr. Rao Tatavarti for learning and improving our knowledge and engineering skills).”

The team of SIRC (Prof Rao Tatavarti, Prof PS Rao, Research Associates and Office Staff) deserves a real applause for unraveling the aesthetics of science, engineering and technology.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to Prof. Dr. Rao Tatavarti sir for giving me this wonderful opportunity to work as an intern in SIRC.

In SIRC with the guidance of Tatavarti sir, I had learned how to use light to design great innovate devices like Vidhur, Vayu etc.

We could see the concepts studied in the theory being applied practically. Finding the (x,y) co-ordinates on the PSD for different gases involved a lot of brainstorming and after a lot of thought process and discussions, we were able to theoretically find the (x,y) co-ordinates for different gases. Each and every discussion with Rao sir was so informative for us.

And along with it I had learned how to apply machine learning to analyze the gaseous present in the air.

I had designed a PCB using Altium Designer and learned the hardware skills along with software.

Overall, it was a great learning experience. I look forward to work under Rao sir again.

Interning at SIRC, under Dr. Rao sir has been a great opportunity for learning and adapting to the real world requirements. I personally am a physics enthusiast and am fascinated by how the principles of science were incorporated along with engineering here at the laboratory. It was an amazing experience coming to know that the light we know, can be used to detect audio, molecular concentrations. Access to the in-laboratory wind tunnel has provided an insight into how Wind Tunnels worked.

We got to learn about signal as well as image processing ie., how to extract required information with data acquired from sensors and draw conclusions about the event to which the data corresponds to. In the image processing experiment, we got to process the images and make out shapes of various things in the image. This was quite amazing because this was the first time we were working on image processing.

Rao sir has been kind enough and resourceful sharing with us, his ideas and helped us rectify the errors we were performing whilst this intern period. It was a great team to work with. Students who came from VIT have been quite friendly and it was joyful working together.

All in all, it was an exquisite experience and makes me more curious whenever I revisit the work I've done. I look forward to working under Dr.Rao sir again.

It was indeed a privilege to work under Prof. Dr. Rao Tatavarti. His guidance throughout the internship was valuable, which is going to help us throughout the life.

It was so exciting to work with the photonics equipment and conducted several experiments. I still remember, initially we all were clueless about how lasers can detect microbes in water samples & Identification of gas particles on VOC’s, Dhoop, etc.

Everyday has been a lesson and every challenge faced while working improved my problem solving capacity. We were able to complete the work in an organized and disciplined fashion which has reflected in our personal lives as well. The knowledge gained while working as a research intern has led to professional as well as personal development. The experience we got here can’t be compared with work experience in any other organization. In SIRC we are exposed to interdisciplinary projects, which cleared so many doubts in the basics of other disciplines. And finally “The one we learnt is not an ending, its just a beginning for something else that we have to explore”.

Thank you sir for giving me an opportunity to be a part of SIRC.

Akella SriVidya Neeharika, ECE, GVPCE

Work Culture: I worked in a team of two with Sanjukta as my co-team member. The work was assigned to us which we used to divide among ourselves and proceed. We had have a comfortable sitting area with required internet connection. The day usually started with an assignment to be completed by evening and results to be analyzed as well as nicely demonstrated to Dr. Rao and sometimes research assistants as well. Although we used to work daily for seven-eight hours consistently but work was never over burdened on us.

The direct learning is useful to me, the experience taught me a lot of things which is helpful when I am solving a particular problem statement. As a graduate student, my experience at SIRC has contributed to my successful academic proceedings at NC State. Thanks again for providing a learning experience.

Chahat Ahuja ECE, VIT University

SIRC is a very good platform for students in terms of research. Most of the students from SIRC are pursuing their Masters. In SIRC people can know how a product or project can be done from scratch. We gained a lot of knowledge in SIRC, which we is being used in interviews and in Masters Program. In any organisation we will be confined to a particular work, where as in SIRC we are given challenging interdisciplinary tasks of different kinds which gave us wide knowledge about different fields. The experience we got here can’t be compared with work experience in any other organisation, since in latter we are confined to a specific work, but in SIRC we are exposed to interdisciplinary projects, which cleared so many doubts in the basics of other disciplines. Now we are capable to take any project.

K. Satya Charan Tej, Mechanical, GVPCE

I am very proud to say that, I am an SIRC internee. This is a very good opportunity to gvpains to work in SIRC in real time projects.

Coming to knowledge gaining it’s obvious, because interacting with different trades (ECE, Mech. and VIT project guys) that to working at cutting edge technologies, practical and real projects makes our thoughts wider.

Discipline and project deadlines makes little Choking in lives, but we learned how an industrial exposure will be, wonderful presentation skills too.

Sometimes we are thinking that we are scientists doing a good job for our country, it’s a funny thing but this pushes us every day.

Naveen Ganta, Mechanical, GVPCE

At SIRC I had an amazing experience. It is a privilege indeed to work here. Initially when I joined, I had some suspicion, whether lasers can really be used to detect wind. But after performing extensive experiments, I am convinced that not only wind, temperature and humidity but we can also find smoke and other gas particles.

My days here had been a great learning experience, technically and personally. I learned about various fundamentals of communication, about gas sensors, GSM and WiFi communication and most important, about photonics. I feel amazed and excited to see that all those DSP concepts taught in classes are so beautiful in real world. Rao sir’s clarity of thought really inspires me. From day one, he had a vision and step by step, we move closer to it. Looking back it feels nice to see what we have done.

Working in team I learned, how much can we do together! There had been days, we didn't slept whole nights, but working together is always fun. Parin Bhaiya’s leadership is admirable, he maintains his calm even under a lot of pressure. Sometimes a 20 minute experiment consumes whole day due to multiple factors we can’t control, and all other tasks we had to do gets delayed. We slept for few hours, burning midnight oil but got our work done. Siva sir took care of all of us. His simplicity and good nature is admirable. He has a habit of keep learning from anybody he can, keeping his ego far apart. Rao sir’s understanding of subject, whether it be electronics, DSP or internal wave motion in water is inspirational. Meetings with sir are always about learning something new, sometimes these concepts we did learned in class. But here we learn them with a new perspective. In nutshell, during this internship I realised that all those hours spent in practicing and understanding theory are worth spending. Because when you land here all the physics, maths and chemistry you learned come together in real world and makes a difference.

I am gonna miss this place.

Sandal Kotawala, VIT University

It was indeed a privilege to work under Rao sir. His guidance throughout the internship was valuable, which is going to help us throughout the life.

It was so exciting to work with the photonics equipment and conduct several experiments. I still remember, initially we all were clueless about how it is possible to detect gases using light. Gradually, as the days passed we experienced it ourselves. Rao sir had a vision and he guided us at every step.

We also got to learn about signal processing, how to extract information from raw data and make comparisons. All of us worked with the gas sensors for the first time. Apart from this we also learnt how make a perfect presentation and what are the minute details to be kept in mind while making a presentation.

It was a great team to work with. Everyone helped each other. All of us gelled together as a team and Siva sir helped us throughout the stay. He helped us a lot in the experiments and his simplicity and down to earth behaviour impressed us all.

Overall it was a great learning experience. I look forward to work under Rao sir again.

Suyash Prakash, VIT University

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr. Rao Tatavarti for giving me an opportunity to be a part of SIRC. When I joined, I had some doubt, whether photonics system can really be used in the field of SHM. But after performing extensive experiments, I got better result compared to other system. The work atmosphere was excellent and had good support from the office staff. I felt so happy and thanks to prof. Dr. Rao Tatavarti for providing me chance to present my work in front of senior dignitaries personality.

The extra things I learned at SIRC , self-learning through internet, communication skill, Power Point Presentation, writing journal papers. The most important thing, I learned at SIRC is time. Under Prof. Dr. Rao Tatavarti, we able to complete the work in an organized and disciplined fashion, which led our professional as well as personal development. Overall, I was totally satisfied and thanks for providing me chance, to be a part of SIRC.
